Seventeen members of the University of Saskatchewan wrestling squad captured medals in front of a hometown crowd on Saturday, as the Huskies hosted Canada West championships.

Sierra Mullin and Myah Phillips finished atop the podium in the women’s 53-kilogram and 83-kilogram divisions, respectively, while Donovan Neudorf (65 kg) earned the lone gold medal on the men’s side.

In other women’s results, Caitlin Clatney (59 kg) and Kate McLachlan (68 kg) finished with silver and Ellia Gaudet (50 kg), Kayley Clarke (62 kg), Angel Besskkaystare (65 kg) and Taebyn Tulp (72 kg) each came away with bronze.

Meanwhile, Drake Buechler (61 kg), Dilon Hammer (76 kg), Judah Arthurs (82 kg) and Aleksander Eisler (125 kg) claimed second on the men’s side, with Davyd Dzyuba (57 kg), Ashton Bodnarchuk (68 kg), Cole Sanderson (72 kg) and Matthew Yong (90 kg) all coming in third.

The collective results led to both teams earning Canada West bronze, with the men tallying 35 points and the women accumulating 32.

The Alberta Golden Bears secured the top spot on the men’s side with 53 points and Calgary did the same on the women’s side with 46 points.

Two Huskies were also recognized with Canada West awards at the event, with Clatney and Buechler being named recipients of the Student-Athlete Community Service Awards.

Up next, the wrestlers will prepare for the U Sports Championships Feb. 28-March 1 at Brock University.

Grassick sets program record in women’s basketball regular season finale

Saskatchewan sealed up first place in Canada West women’s basketball on Saturday night, with a 100-45 victory over the host Brandon Bobcats, bringing their winning streak to 18 games and capping off their regular season with an 18-2 record.

The Huskies were helped in their win by a game-high 20-point performance from Logan Reider, as well as 18 points and eight assists from Gage Grassick.

The eight assists bring Grassick’s season total to 120, setting a new program season record. The previous benchmark was set by Jill Humbert in the 2010-11 season with 113.

On Friday night, Saskatchewan had a record-tying game, as they defeated the Bobcats 116-40, thanks in part to a game-high 28 points from Grassick.

The 116 points ties a program record for the most points scored in a single game. The other game was played on Jan. 18, 1973 when the Huskies defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 116-17.

Saskatchewan will face the victor of the eight versus nine play-in game in the Canada West quarterfinals on Feb. 22.

Over in men’s action, a pair of losses eliminated the Huskies from the postseason as they finish 5-15 and in ninth place in the Prairie Conference.

In Saturday’s game, Saskatchewan fell 60-53 in Brandon, as Emmanuel Bonsu lead the Dogs with 15 points, while teammate Easton Thimm chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The night before, Thimm had another double-double performance with a team-high 16 points and 11 rebounds, but the Huskies were defeated 74-64.

Huskies men’s hockey team clinches first place

A sweeping home stand against the Manitoba Bisons has the Saskatchewan men’s hockey team wrapping up the Canada West season in first place with a 23-5-0 record.

On Saturday, Chantz Petruic scored a pair of goals for the Dogs, while teammates Carter Stebbings and Jarrett Penner each added one on route to defeating the Bisons 4-2.

Jordan Kooy made 17 saves on 19 shots for the Huskies to earn the win.

The night prior, Keaton Sorensen’s goal in the second period proved to the difference maker as Saskatchewan held off a Bison comeback to win 2-1.

Chase Bertholet had the other Huskie goal, while Roddy Ross made 21 saves in net.

Saskatchewan will have a bye the first week of playoffs, but will then host a best-of-three Canada West semifinal Feb. 28-March 2.

The 2024-25 season officially came to an end for the women’s team (4-17-1-6) on Saturday night, as they fell 2-1 to the host Bisons.

In that game, Sara Kendall scored for Saskatchewan in the first period, but Manitoba picked up two in the second to claim the win. Colby Wilson made 32 saves in the loss.

On Friday night, Bronwyn Boucher and Jessica Patterson both scored for the Huskies while Clara Juca made 22 saves in a 5-2 defeat.

Huskie volleyball teams are playoff bound

Saskatchewan’s volleyball teams are heading to the Canada West postseason, as the men’s team finished the regular season campaign in fourth with a 14-6 record and the women finished eighth at 10-10.

On the road against the Trinity Western University Spartans, the men’s team won 3-0 (25-22, 30-28 and 25-17) on Saturday night, with Isaiah Mamer earning 13 kills.

The victory avenged the Huskies’ loss on Friday night, where they found themselves on the opposite side of the sweep, losing 0-3 (22-25, 21-25 and 20-25), this time with Emmett Graham leading the team with 15 kills.

Meanwhile, the women’s team suffered back-to-back losses to the Spartans, falling 1-3 (25-19, 20-25, 18-25 and 23-25) on Saturday night, with Keely Anderson recording 12 kills, as well as 2-3 (30-28, 25-18, 16-25, 13-25 and 9-15) on Friday, with Rosetta Cyr recording 14 kills.

The results mean that both Huskies teams will host the Spartans during their respective first rounds of Canada West playoffs.

On the women’s side, TWU finished ninth, so they’ll visit Saskatchewan for a best-of-three play-in series Feb. 21-23, while the men’s team, who finished fifth, will be in Saskatoon the following week to face the Huskies in a best-of-three quarterfinal series Feb. 28-March 2.
